Workshops/Events

While I like to mostly stay around the homestead I do periodically travel places to teach workshops or attend events. I’ll endeavor to keep this page up to date with such things that are coming up.

Vessel Raising Workshop

October 21-23, 2022
at
Urban Metal Studio
in
Mesa, AZ

It has been a LONG time since I’ve done a Raising Workshop so I’m particularly excited about doing this one! The challenge is usually having enough forming stakes for a class of up to 12 students to be all working at once. For this workshop I’ve spent quite a bit of time and sweat making 12 sets of 5 stakes each so everyone will have their own set to utilize during the class. (If you wish to keep the stakes after the class they will be available for purchase.)

I’m also pleased to have Urban Metal Studio out in Mesa, AZ hosting this class. It’s a wonderful facility that provides ample space for us to make a lot of noise swinging hammers as we learn to transform flat sheets of metal into volumetric forms.

During the course of the workshop we’ll explore single and multi-node raising. I’ll also cover how I go about finishing an edge by soldering on a wire rim. In the past not everyone has actually gotten to, or wants to, solder on a rim, but most students do get at least one vessel raised up into its basic form during the 3 days of class. (This is another way of me saying the workshop is technique oriented rather than project oriented. You might not finish a piece, but you should get a handle on the techniques.)

If you are interested in this workshop you might also like the vessel chasing workshop happening right after where you can take the vessel you’ve just raised and develop it further with decorative chasing.

This workshop is open to all skill levels. For more details or to sign up here is a link to the class at Urban Metal Studio’s website.

Vessel Chasing Workshop

October 24-26, 2022

Mesa, AZ

I’m happy to again be doing my popular 3 day Vessel Chasing Workshop. Chasing is where I spend the bulk of my studio time. It’s a labor intensive process but it’s ability to transform the look of a vessel is magical to me. I’m still fascinated by how such simple tools can create such complex works when you learn the skills to use them.

In this class we will use premade spun copper forms to chase on. Alternately if you take the raising workshop happening immediately before this one you could use the vessel you raise there. In place of traditional pitch we will be using a microcrystalline wax which I find to be much easier when working with vessels.

I will have my basic 15 piece chasing tool sets available for each student to use during the workshop. If you want to keep the tools after they will be available for purchase as well. In addition we will cover how to make your own chasing tools and everyone will have the opportunity to make a few if they desire. I will also be covering how to finish an edge by soldering on a wire rim. In all honesty very few students get to this in class due to time constraints but I feel the need to share the info.

As I alluded to above, this class is technique oriented not project oriented. We will be covering the techniques, but due to their time consuming, labor intensive nature, you should not expect to complete a piece in class.

This workshop is open to all skill levels. If you’ve taken this class before and want to skip some of the longer demos you’ve already seen in order to spend more time chasing the Urban Metal Studio facilities are fabulous and spacious which should allow us to let you hammer away in another room without disturbing those watching the demo.
